Help with your Canon MX printer: ink & troubleshooting questions

How do I find my Canon MX printer model?

  • Look for the complete model number on the printer’s front or top panel, or check its label or documentation.
  • Choose that exact number in the finder or directory above. MX is the series name; the numbers identify the model.

Which ink cartridges does my MX printer use?

  • Open your model page to see the ink options listed for that printer.
  • Compare the cartridge numbers, colours, pack contents and stated yields before selecting a product.

Do all Canon MX printers use the same ink?

  • No. The MX range includes printers using black and tri-colour cartridges as well as models using separate ink tanks.
  • Do not choose a cartridge simply because its packaging says PIXMA or MX. Match the full printer model and cartridge number.

Can I choose XL ink for my Canon MX printer?

  • Choose an XL option only when the product listing includes your exact printer model.
  • Compare the stated yield and pack contents. A high-yield cartridge does not make another cartridge family interchangeable.

What is the difference between original, compatible and remanufactured ink?

  • Original cartridges are Canon-branded supplies.
  • Compatible cartridges are third-party replacement supplies; remanufactured cartridges reuse cartridge bodies that have been prepared and refilled.
  • Check the product’s description for its type and compatibility. Third-party options are not available for every model or supply.

Should I buy individual cartridges or a multipack?

  • Choose a single cartridge when you need only that colour or supply.
  • Consider a multipack when its included colours and quantities match your needs. Some packs include spare black cartridges.
  • Compare the actual pack contents and current price; black and colour page yields should not be added into one total.

What are FINE cartridges, and how do I replace them?

  • FINE printers in this example use two cartridges: one black and one tri-colour containing cyan, magenta and yellow. Replacing the tri-colour unit replaces all three colour supplies together. Example: MX492, in the MX490 series. Covers and locks can differ on other models.
  • 1. Open: Turn on the printer and open the front and paper-output covers as directed in its manual. Wait for the cartridge holder to stop; never move it by hand.
  • 2. Release: On the MX490 series, push the empty cartridge down until it clicks, then remove it.
  • 3. Prepare: Gently remove the new cartridge’s protective tape. Avoid touching its contacts or nozzles.
  • 4. Install: Insert at a slant, then push in and up until secure. Match black and colour slots, close the cover and allow cleaning to finish.

What are individual ink tanks, and how do I replace them?

  • Individual tanks hold separate ink supplies; the print head remains in the printer. Example: MX922, in the MX920 series, has five tanks, including two different blacks. Turn on the printer, open the specified covers and wait for the holder to stop.
  • Press the old tank’s tab and lift it out. Replace one tank at a time.
  • Remove the new tank’s tape, film and protective cap as instructed. Do not touch the ink port.
  • Insert the front at a slant in the correctly labelled slot, then press the top until it clicks. Close the covers and let the printer finish.

Why does remanufactured ink still show a low or empty warning?

  • A remanufactured cartridge may not display a fresh ink estimate. Read the exact support code before continuing.
  • For MX470 code 1688, Canon permits holding Stop for at least five seconds with the cartridge installed to continue the current print job. This disables remaining-ink detection; it does not refill ink or reset its level.
  • Use this only when your exact model’s manual permits it. Replace genuinely empty ink; do not use this procedure for B200 or 5100.
  • Canon 1688 instructions ↗

What should I do about a B200 error?

  • On the MX920 series, Canon identifies B200 as an error requiring service. Turn off the printer, unplug it and contact Canon service.
  • Unplugging can delete stored faxes. B200 is not an ink-level warning, and holding Stop is not Canon’s prescribed repair.

How do I clear a 5100 error?

  • For MX920 code 5100, cancel printing and turn off the printer. Following the manual, remove jammed paper or protective material obstructing the print-head holder, then restart.
  • Do not force the holder or touch internal components. Contact service if the code remains.

How do I fix streaks, missing colours or blurry text?

  • Check ink, cartridge installation, media type and quality settings, then print a nozzle-check pattern.
  • If the pattern has gaps, run normal print-head cleaning and check again. Follow the model’s maintenance sequence before deep cleaning; repeated cleaning uses ink.
  • For misaligned lines, run print-head alignment. If streaks occur only in scans or copies, inspect the scanner and ADF glass instead.

How should I clean the ADF or address paper-feed problems?

  • First distinguish original documents jamming in the ADF from printing paper failing to feed from the tray. Their maintenance procedures differ.
  • For MX490 ADF cleaning, finish fax activity and save or print stored faxes before switching off and unplugging. Memory contents can be lost.
  • Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth on the areas Canon specifies, including the feeder cover and glass. Do not apply cleaners to sensors or assume rollers need wiping.
  • Remove obstructions and use the exact model’s roller-cleaning or jam-removal procedure if feeding problems persist.

Which paper and quality settings should I use?

  • For everyday documents, choose the correct plain-paper size and Standard quality; Draft is useful for rough copies where offered.
  • For photos, load supported inkjet photo paper and select its matching media type and an appropriate photo-quality setting.
  • Plain copy paper, supported glossy photo papers and envelopes suit different tasks. Check your model’s supported sizes, weights and loading direction; never feed envelopes or photo paper through the ADF.
